Private keys are stored on a CC EAL5+ certified Secure Element chip inside the Ledger device. They never leave that chip, even during transactions. Every send, swap, stake, or DeFi interaction requires physical confirmation on the device. Even if your computer is compromised, no one can move your funds without your Ledger in hand.
Your crypto is on the blockchain, not the device. The Ledger stores the keys. If lost, get a new one and restore with your 24-word recovery phrase. Everything - accounts, balances, staking positions - comes right back. The phrase is your ultimate backup. Protect it like cash.
